Process or Product Making

Do you make to make or do you make to make something?

I do both and I approach them very differently. I’ll be sharing them all on here though 🙂

I’m not a very patient person so I often found it confusing that I would choose crafts that were very time intensive for the output. I’ve finally figured out that I have 2 different motivations for making things.

Sometimes I want the thing at the end of the project – most of my sewing projects fall into this category. I enjoy sewing, but I’m doing it because I want the item that results from the sewing. If I’m using my circular sock machine – I want the actual socks (or to see how the colorway knits up) and I want them as quick as possible.

Sometimes the end item really isn’t all that important. Let’s take spinning – this is the most impractical of all my loves. I can buy good yarn cheaper than roving. I can still control the colors by dyeing it myself. But the call of that spinning wheel just kept getting louder until one lived in my house. But it’s not about the yarn. It’s about feeling the fiber slide between my fingers and watching it fill up a bobbin. If I actually make something out of the yarn that’s just a bonus.

Handknitting socks sorta straddles the fence. It can fall into both categories. Ya know – just so I don’t start thinking I’ve got myself figured out.
